about
I started putting together this composition with these performers in mind, around this time last year, hoping the day would eventually come when we would get to perform it. After composing for and performing with the ensemble so regularly (up to that point), it was hard to come to terms with the new reality of isolated creation. That’s why the words emerged like ‘I’m still here,’ and ‘days are lost.’ These emotions mixed with steady elements of nature (light, sun, darkness, shadows) bring together a unity of voice, as well as an independence of words and self-expression.
I had kind of given up on the piece, or had set it to the side. It was hard (as I would guess it was for most composers) to imagine any polyphonic music in the foreseeable future (at that point). It began as a set of 5-6 voices embodying a quasi jazz/sacred harmony and remained unfinished. Once I got the call from Devina that the recital was going to be produced as an album, we started talking about what we should do. Devina wanted to do something with the Into the Light Ensemble and to have a singing component. So after going through various ideas and composing a lot of inspired music for trumpet, I realized that “On and On” might be a good fit for this occasion. It was a great inspiration, because it prompted me to condense 5-6 loose voices and get them accurately calculated and condensed into 4 continuous parts, as well as clearly phrased and articulated lyricism.
lyrics
I
Soprano
Light shine down bright and true
Always above me
All my days lost and torn away
Time wears on
Don’t let go
I’m on your side
Waiting here for you
And I’m here
It’s true
Alto 1
Light shine down bright and
True as ever seen
Like morning, high above you, sun
Days, torn away, gone
Time goes on
Don’t let go, I’m here
I’m still here now
Always I’m with you here
Alto 2
Light shine down bright and true
Lovely, bright and high above
You and I
Days are lost, torn apart
Time goes on
Don’t let go now
I’m here, I’m here still
Bass
Light shine down bright, true
Light, high above you and I
Days, torn apart
Time goes on
Don’t let go
I’m here still
I’m here stil
II
Soprano
Lonely, tired and depressed
When will I see the light of day?
So bright, true and pure
Dark, night
Moonlight, sunrise
Breaking through ev’ry day
I’m still here
Hoping, longing
All day long and night
Light, bright, and warm, hot sun
Shine down
Blinding, burning through me
On and on
Shadows, gloom, light
Through me
Alto I
Lonely, deeply wanting
Will I see all my light?
So bright and true?
Pure, dark night and
Moonlight, sunrise, day
I’m here
Hoping, longing all day long
All night long
Light, bright, warm, hot sun
Shine down
Blinding flames
Burn through me brightly
On and On
Shadows, gloom, light
Shine through me
Alto II
Lonely and tired
Hoping I will see light
So bright, true
Pure, dark night
Shine through, and moonlight
Sunrise, days will come
Always I’m here
Hoping for the day to come
So long, all day long
Light, bright, warm sun shine down
Blinding flames burning through the night
Slowly on and on
Shadows, gloom, light
Shine through me
Bass
Lonely, but not through yet
I’ll be here, right by you
Pure, dark night, moonrise
I’m here
Hoping, longing all day long
Light, bright, warm sundown
Blinding flames burning through
Slowly on and on
Shadows, gloom, light
Shine through me
